BIRKENSTOCK is an exceptional phenomenon in a clothing industry characterized by short-lived fashion trends. The company’s roots can be traced back to 1774. Our brand identity is based on a solid foundation of two and a half centuries of corporate history.
BIRKENSTOCK is a global brand. BIRKENSTOCK is not only one of the top five global footwear brands, it is also one of the most well known German brands in the world. With around 3,000 employees, this tradition-rich, sixth-generation family-owned business is also the German footwear industry’s largest employer. About one in four employees in the industry works at BIRKENSTOCK. More than 1,100 new jobs have been created since the beginning of 2013, almost all of them in Germany. This is because BIRKENSTOCK produces most of its products at its own production facilities in Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse and Saxony.
BIRKENSTOCK has been a global player since the 1970's. Our products are sold in some 90 countries on all continents. And our organization is becoming increasingly international as well. BIRKENSTOCK has eight locations in Germany. Internationally, we are represented with sales offices in the United States, Brazil, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Denmark, Slovakia, Spain and the United Kingdom.

The high level of quality is the result of carefully selected, high-quality materials from sustainable sources that are processed under what are for our brand typically demanding conditions. Our products promote well being. They literally do good. So they stand out from the flood of cheap products that dominate large parts of our consumer world today.
Since 1774, we've been thinking of ways we – the inventor of the footbed – can make the lives of our customers better and richer – with a good shoe for all conceivable situations in life. In an overwhelmingly price-driven consumer world characterized by cheap products made in Asia under precarious conditions for both people and nature, BIRKENSTOCK, with its premium quality products, creates a reasonable alternative for those who place value on function and quality.
That's why manufacture our products in Germany under the best conditions for our brand in our own production facilities with an extensive amount of handwork. Every sandal undergoes 17 work steps. It takes well over 100 highly skilled hand movements to make the completed product for our closed BIRKENSTOCK models. Closed shoes are made in workshops in Portugal in accordance with the principles of a centuries-old tradition of hand craftsmanship.
Whether they are produced by hand or using industrial methods – all BIRKENSTOCK products meet the highest quality standards in the shoe industry anywhere in the world. We make just as few compromises when we source our materials (cork, natural latex, copper, brass, wool felt and the best leather) as we do when we process them. Our raw materials come from sustainable natural resources. Where possible, we source these materials in Europe.

Betula is the brand for price-conscious customers who place great value on a high level of comfort. The family brand offers a broad range of stylish sandals and clogs for leisure and everyday activities. The upper material of all models is made of Birko-Flor®, a synthetic material that is gentle on the skin and easy to care for, which is covered on the inside with a soft, breathable layer of fleece, thus providing a comfortable fit.
Birko-Flor® opens up a lot of options for colours. The Betula range includes both monochrome models in classic and trendy colours and sandals and clogs with trendy print motifs. The anatomically shaped footbed of the Betula is comprised of a flexible cork and rubber combination. The Betula footbed has a high elasticity and good cushioning. So it provides special support for a natural footstep. There are models made of ultralight, highly flexible EVA for trips to the beach and the health and wellness spa.
